The paper deals with an investigation into the possible effects of some short- to medium-term solutions for increasing the runway system capacity at currently capacity-constrained airports facing growing airside demand. The main hypothesis is that one of the prospective solutions can be the implementation of innovative operational procedures supported by the new technologies developed in the scope of European SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) and US NextGen (Next Generation) development programmes. In such a context, this investigation consists of an analysis of the characteristics of the given innovative operational procedures and supportive new technologies and then modelling their possible effects on the runway system capacity of a given airport For such a purpose, the existing analytical models for estimating the 'ultimate' and 'practical' capacity of the system of two closely spaced parallel runways have been appropriately modified and applied to Dubai Interrtational Airport (DXB) in the UAE. The results have indicated that the innovative operational procedures supported by new technologies could have some potential for increasing both the 'ultimate' and 'practical' capacity of the runway system at the given airport (DXB) under given conditions, and consequently contribute to postponing its full saturation under conditions of continuously growing demand.
