Aviation security requirements are generally threat-driven and can differ greatly among international airports, their operational and political environments, and regulatory mandates. For better or worse, most nations tend to follow the lead of the US Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Security Administration, which has recently published its 226-page 'Recommended Security Guidelines for Airport Planning, Design and Construction', released in May 2011.It is a wide-ranging compendium of good ideas, recommendations and best practices for managers of airports of every size and complexity.
