Background: Lignans are one of the three main groups ofrnplant compounds classified as phytoestrogens. They havernbeen shown to have health benefits for females throughoutrnthe life span as well as for men in several studies. Enterolactonern(ENL) is a lignan produced in the human gut throughrnfermentation of dietary precursors such as matairesinol andrnhydroxymatairesinol (HMR). Enterolactone is the primaryrncirculating mammalian plant lignan and is used as a biomarkerrnfor plant lignan intake.rnPurpose and hypothesis: This protocol was designed tornprovide a structured environment in which to test the abilityrnof the proprietary dietary supplement, HMRlignan,™ tornalter the levels of mammalian lignans and estrogen metabolitesrnin a population of healthy post-menopausal women.rnAdditionally, frequency of occurrence of hot flashes amongrnthe subjects were tracked/calculated for the study period.rnMaterials and methods: Study design: 8-week controlledrnstudy in 20 menopausal women (diagnosis of natural or surgicalrnmenopause for at least one year; age 50–75 years; BMI u0002rn25 and u0003 35 kg/m2).
