The Arrhenius behavior of the primary kinetic isotope effect, (k~H/k~d)_Obs and (k~H/k~T)_Obs, associated with the methanolic sodium methoxide- promoted dehydrohalogenations of m-ClC_6H_4C~iHClCH_2Cl (I), m-CF_3C_6H_4C~I- HClCH_2Cl(II) and p-CF_3C_6H_4C~iHClCH_2F(III) has been used to calculate the internal-return parameters, a=k_1/ K_Elim~X, in a two-step mechanism featuring a hydrogen-bonded carbainion.
