The historical significance of the mean camber line of airfoils is briefly discussed and the relevance to modern sections is presented. It is demonstrated that the mid point of the normal to the chord line at any location along the airfoil does not in general lie on the camber line. An approach for constructing the camber lines of arbitrary airfoils using a simple geometric approach is described. The method is verified for arbitrary shapes with known solutions and demonstrated for a NACA airfoil with predefined camber.
