摘要

GRETL is a high-quality, feature-rich, and accurate econometrics package. Most importantly, it is a public resource for all economists around the world. The intuitive and well laid out user interface makes it an ideal tool for learning and teaching econometrics, as discussed in detail by Mixon and Smith (2006). Furthermore, the program proves to be as good or even better in terms of numerical precision compared to other, widely used alternatives. Unlike commercial software, GRETL does not require any monetary contribution from its users, and it does not have the financial resources for any type of paid advertisement. Just like other open-source projects, it depends on the embrace of the profession to survive, good word of mouth to spread, and active participation by the community to flourish. While it is evident that researchers in most universities usually have access to comprehensive (albeit expensive and black box) software to conduct research, we believe that it is a responsibility of people in academia to participate in the use and development of free/libre and open-source tools such as GRETL.
