As an introduction to the Minisymposium, the following points are addressed. 1. What is meant by "modelling"? 2. Why modelling industrial fluid flows ? 3. Depending on the field of application, what are the aims of mathematical modelling? 4. Mathematical models vs. measurement. 5. Analytical techniques vs. computational methods. 6. Advantages of combined methods. 7. Difficulties and limitations due to, among others, uncertain basic equations and boundary conditions, largely different length and/or time scales, instabilities and non-uniqueness.
