In this paper, the transient wave propagation in an elastic halfspace caused by suddenly applied surface loads is analyzed by two alternative solution methods: a continuum mechanic approach and the direct time domain boundary element method (TD-BEM). The characteristics of the transient propagation of elastodynamic waves are investigated, studying the classical Lamb's problem in 3D. Since the accuracy of numerical solutions depends on the modeling and discretization of the system under analysis, some discretization aspects related to the use of the TD-BEM approach in wave propagation problems are discussed.
