Dependence of LED light distribution on electrical drive parameters

摘要

Two types of sources that have been used for fiber optic communication systems are solid‐state lasers and light‐emitting diodes (LED’s). Since the lifetimes of the LED’s are considerably longer than those of the solid‐state lasers, LED’s are preferred presently for system applications. We have shown that the intensity distribution, and hence, the amount of optical power coupled from an LED into a fiber, is dependent on the average power level as well as the voltage bias on th LED. Under pulsed operation the LED intensity distribution is therefore dependent both upon the average power level as well as the duty cycle. The dependence has been measured in both the edge as well as dome emitters.
