The Red River Delta in the North of Vietnam (Fig. 1) is characterized by a triangular shaped low-lying delta plain that developed during the major part of the Holocene. The transition from estuary towards delta took place at about 8500 cal years BP and since then the delta has been growing in a downstream direction over a distance of more than 250 km. Especially, in the last 6500 years the delta system has been rapidly prograding due to a lack of accommodation space for the fluvial sediment in response to a stable or even falling sea level in the Gulf of Tonkin (Hori et al., 2004). About 4000 years ago, the former shoreline of the delta was located close to the present city of Hanoi. In the period 2000-1000 years BP the northern, tide-dominated part of the delta system developed. This part of the delta system is presently characterized by a series of funnel-shaped estuaries and tidal creeks (Fig. 1; see also Mathers and Zalasiewicz, 1999). However, about 1000 years ago, depositional processes shifted towards the south again, building up the southern delta lobe which appears to be dominated by fluvial and wave-induced morphological features.
