摘要

In 1995, I began working as a production assistant at National Public Radio in Washington. Dominating my desk was a "dumb terminal"-a keyboard and monitor that displayed only text-connected to a mainframe computer. A colleague showed me how to send a "top-of-the-screen message" to anyone else in the building. I remember thinking, "Why would I send a computer message to someone sitting down the hall?" Less than two decades later, for most of us, participating in the networked media culture is as integral to our lives as brushing our teeth.
