Jack Fuller's (1996) book News Values reflected on and defended traditional concepts of news and newsgathering and reporting practices: truth telling and accuracy, balance and impartiality, and service to the community. He continues to defend those values in his new book, What is Happening to News. But the context in which they come into play is now in sharper relief than it was 14 years earlier. Even though it was obvious in the '90s that cable news and then the Internet were disruptive technologies, newspapers (and traditional television news) are losing audience and advertisers now to a degree that was almost inconceivable earlier. Fuller says the Standard Model of Professional journalism (his caps) is in decline. He doesn't exactly blame the Standard Model for the decline, but he does say accommodations to the new communications environment need to be made.
