In the past several years, American universities acknowledged a widespread parochialism in course content. Departments of "Foreign Languages" metamorphosed into departments of "World Languages"; advisory committees on curriculum internationalization sprang up and renewed emphasis was placed on study abroad programs; the election of Barack Obama and the events of his first year in office heightened the push to educate college students as citizens of the world.
