Stanton spent the war years preparing analyses of radio propaganda for the Office of War Information, and a decade later he would be named the founding Chairman of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. Even after his attention was occupied with management matters Stanton advocated for more research into human behavior in both the corporate and academic worlds. He continued to associate closely with Lazarsfeld and other academics, at one point hiring Joseph Klapper, a Ph.D. student of Lazarsfeld's, to direct CBS's research efforts. It was while he was at CBS that Klapper published his key 1960 study, The Effects of Mass Communication (Carey, 1996, pp. 23-24). As Glander (2000) notes, "Stanton's influence on the development of mass communication research ... deserves to be given a closer and more thorough scrutiny" (p. 84). Stanton realized that his scholarship would receive little academic attention. When asked why research produced by the networks was apparently treated differently than similar scholarship produced by academics, he ventured a personal "interpretation."
