摘要

The Press is a compilation of essays by some of the leading journalists and journalism scholars in this country. However, this book should not be considered a bibliographic collection but rather the actual essays from the theorists that many cite in research. The argument set forth is that the press is an institution of American democracy. The idea for this book came from a meeting held by the Annenberg Foundation of Trust at Sunnylands, in which some 50 journalists and scholars discussed how journalism and democracy fit together. One participant believed that journalism was the means with democracy at the end. The rich history of journalism in America and where it is going is thoroughly examined with such sections as the development of journalism. Within this section, the history of journalism is examined including the development of the minority press in America. This chapter goes into the history of minority journalism quite extensively. The same section also has chapters on how the press in other countries compares to U.S. journalists, the accountability to which journalists have always tried to hold people in power, how journalism is defined by journalists themselves, and how it becomes a part of their lives that they usually live with every day. This section ends with another chapter on journalism across the borders, only this chapter talks about how the press may help to bring about democracy in other countries.
