摘要

As Mexico's government undertook neoliberal reforms to join the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994, a number of scholars questioned the cultural consequences of closer media ties to the United States and Canada. Government officials countered that Mexico's strong identity needed no protection. This study situates the disagreement within cultural policy traditions, and examines how Mexican television broadcasting changed under globalization forces-including domestic competition, international market expansion, and new technology development-duringthe 1990s and early 2000s. The study concludes that insufficient attention was given NAFTA's impact on Mexico's own television industry, which strongly influences culture.
