The term cultural significance gained prom- inence following a congress held by the International Commission on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), at Burra Burra, Australia in 1979. This was an interesting choice of venue as it has industrial, historic and social value for the white settlers going back to the mid-nineteenth century, but also significance to descendants of the aboriginal Ngadjuri people who settled the area before the arrival of the white settlers. Following its adoption by ICOMOS, five years later, cul- tural significance became the gold standard for driving decisions made in respect of the future for significant sites, buildings and monuments. This was, however, 47 years ago. Is it still as valid today as it was then?
