Accounting educators are being encouraged to change from the traditional lecture and problem solving methods of teaching accounting to more open and interactive styles. These different approaches require students to take more personal responsibility for learning and achievement of course goals. This study introduces the Achievement on Effort (AOE) concept as a means of measuring and correlating students pledged efforts with their desired outcome or grade. We present empirical evidence on student achievement based on their pledged attendance, participation and preparedness at the beginning of a semester. This pledged effort is also correlated to previous academic achievement and the overall difficulty of the course. The results show that when students take responsibility for their effort and involvement they achieve a higher level of learning, which is demonstrated by a higher grade for the course work performed.
