Emerald publisher Kim Foster interviewed the following three business leaders at the Leaders in London 2007 Conference. These are exclusive interviews that range over a wide variety of topics, from the impact of the new technology to using music to change behavior in the workplace. Andrew Zolli is an expert in global foresight and innovation, studying the complex trends at the intersection of technology, demographics, politics and global security. His firm, Z+ Partners, helps senior leaders understand and respond to complex change. He serves as a Fellow of the National Geographic Society, where he is leading development of a global initiative to envision new scenarios for a sustainable world in 2030 and beyond. The most interesting thing to me about Facebook is something called its Open API, which allows people to build applications that can be injected into Facebook and spread virally. But the fundamental mistake most networks make is that they try to get value rather than give value. The best way to leverage the network in the short term is to identify mechanisms by which you can deliver additional value to people who use the site. The first lesson of networks is build it before you need it. But the attitude of most businesses is, "how can I exploit the network?".
