There is no shortage of media coverage on the problems or scandals American businesses face on a regular basis. A few years ago, for example, the business media was full of news on the difficulties of the HP/Compaq merger and the conflict between the Packard family and CEO Carly Fiorina. Recently, as another example, the media reported on the failed merger of Chrysler Corporation and Daimler Benz and the inability of Daimler-Chrysler management to reach important agreements with organized labor. These are only two examples of hundreds that recount dire problems businesses face. Have we learned anything that helps us to deal with these problems more effectively today than in the past?
