This work investigated the possible effects of mean velocity gradients ( G ) and mixing time (t) on sludge characteristics at a fixed G_t value (30,000). Different sludge characteristics had distinct dependence on G (or t) values. For example, there was a narrow range of G/t values in that the CST values of the unsettled sludge remained unchanged. On the contrary, no such a range was noted for the settled sludge. The high-G might break up floes into mi-croflocs; nevertheless, shear did not affect the basic architecture of the sludge flocs. Our data clearly reveal that roles of G and t can not be bundled together to become an universal index and this finding gives us a good reason to believe the effect on sludge dewatering or the change, which appears to depend upon the process employed, and the sludge characteristics.
