摘要

Allies of the State is a timely book that analyzes the role China's new private entrepreneurs play in facilitating democratic change. The purpose of the book is to examine the linkage between modernization and democratization, and to determine if Chinese capitalists will be catalysts for democracy. To test these theories, which are embedded in contemporary comparative politics debates, the authors use original survey data collected from 2,071 entrepreneurs. They are interested in determining whether a causal relationship exists and whether entrepreneurs are democratically minded or support the existing authoritarian state. Their main critique of other studies addressing this topic is methodological - sample size, regional variation, and missing variables. However their findings generally support those of other studies, concluding that entrepreneurs are unlikely to serve as agents of democratization and are best considered allies of the state.
