Coordinating contracts for a wind-power equipment supply chain with joint efforts on quality improvement and maintenance services

In developing countries, developing new energy such as wind power has become a top priority due to pressures of international carbon emission reduction and sustainable development. One of the bottle-necks in the development of wind power energy is that the availability of wind power equipment cannot be guaranteed. The equipment availability is determined by the joint efforts of both partners, that is, the equipment manufacturer's effort on quality improvement and the customer enterprise's effort on maintenance services. However, in such joint-effort settings, the equipment manufacturer usually exerts insufficient effort while the customer enterprise exerts excessive effort under the traditional fixed payment contracts, causing efficiency loss of the whole supply chain. To address this problem, three contracts based on revenue sharing and cost sharing are proposed. It shows that a revenue sharing contract can stimulate the equipment manufacturer to improve equipment quality to a higher level, while a revenue sharing contract packaged with quality-improvement cost sharing can approach the optimal performance under some conditions. Furthermore, a revenue sharing contract packaged with both quality-improvement and maintenance-service cost sharing can obtain the optimal outcome when the sharing coefficients satisfy certain conditions. Besides, the contracts are compared in terms of performances and numerical examples are presented to illustrate their performances in more detail. All three contracts can improve the supply chain efficiency and achieve Pareto improvement effectively.
