摘要

Between the late nineteenth century and the end of the Second World War, British-German rivalry extended beyond politics and war (famously described by Clausewitz as the 'continuation of politics by other means') to less obvious areas, such as the creation of the first public television service and rail speed records, with Britain celebrating with some pomp in July 2013 the 75th anniversary of the record of 126 mph for steam traction. This volume, as the title largely makes clear, is about someone involved in one obvious area of rivalry, (political) intrigue, and one less obvious one, archaeology.
