The provenance of this collection is a colloquium held at the Institution of Historical Research and the Institut Francais in London in 2001. This was attended by the French social philosopher Pierre Bourdieu, to whose memory this book is dedicated, and was possibly one of the last occasions that he appeared on British soil before his untimely death barely a year later. I was lucky enough to share some time with him a few days before the colloquium and to discuss both the event and its programme. As always, PB was in two minds about the conference. On the one hand, he applauded the potential to construct an academic space in which 'the unthought could be thought'; on the other hand, he had a realistic view of the limits that such an international gathering would impose on itself in terms of the interests of respective field positions amongst established academics. Bourdieu did not himself give a formal paper. He did, however, share a plenary with Eric Hobsbawm, an occasion which demonstrated a range of the misunderstandings that might exist between a Gallic- and Anglo-centric view of each others' intellectual histories.
