摘要

The modernization and intensification of the dairyindustry has led to larger herd sizes and higher milkproduction, both globally and in Austria. Benchmarkingallows the monitoring of animal health and welfareas well as the identification of potential for improvementby comparing certain parameters with otherfarms with similar management environments. Usingdata from the Austrian routine recording system ofvarious traits of milk production, fertility, and health, farmers and their veterinarians (with the consent ofthe farmer) can compare farm parameters with detaileddata available from their district or state andensure more efficient herd management. The aim ofthe present study was to provide an overview of dairymilk production in Austria based on the annual herdhealth reports and to examine the effects of herd sizeand milk production on fertility and health parameters.Annual herd health reports from all farms participatingin the health monitoring system were considered, andanalyses were conducted across breeds. A large variationbetween farms was observed. The results showedthat, based on parameters of milk yield and herd sizefor the range of farms within this study, it cannot beconcluded that these circumstances automatically leadto poor animal health. Farms with very small herd sizesdiffered significantly from those with larger herd sizes.Overall herd size effects were however small in Austria.Higher milk production based on a single farm does notnecessarily cause more health and fertility problems;however, we detected a tendency for an increased riskof fertility, udder, and metabolic diagnoses. An activehealth management program might result in higherincidence rates for fertility or udder diagnoses, as aveterinary treatment might be economically superiorif, for example, the calving interval can be shortenedor the somatic cell count can be reduced. The resultsof the present study showed that it is advisable to usedifferent benchmarks in combination for monitoringhealth, as well as for deciding on strategies to improveoverall herd health management. Animal health reportson Austrian dairy cows are continuously being developedand new parameters integrated.
