Michael Smythe's New Zealand by Design: A History of New Zealand Product Design offers a unique perspective for anyone looking to expand design history's global map. Structured chronologically, Smythe's tone is engaging and the text is accompanied by many colour illustrations, both historical and contemporary, as well as patent drawings. New Zealand by Design is heavily weighted towards recent design and Smythe's enthusiastic sense of national pride suggests that it is aimed primarily at a New Zealand audience. For antipodeans, writes Smythe, 'Isolation has necessitated a continuous process of adopting, adapting and inventing [. . .] [and] remains a major factor in the development of New Zealand product design' (p. 11). Importantly, Smythe shifts his frame of reference from an imported, European design ideal to concentrate on a comprehensive survey of products designed in New Zealand or by New Zealanders working abroad, thoughtfully contex-tualized within local political and economic changes.
