Dissolution rates of pressure solution (PS) of SiO_2 of soda-lime glass in 0.002 M NaHCO_3 solution were experimentally determined at low temperatures (35℃ to 55℃) and low effective stresses (0.05 MPa). They were 18 ± 2 × 10~(-15) (35℃), 49 ± 4 × 10~(-15) (45℃) and 133 ± 17 × 10~(-15) (55℃) (Si mol/cm~2/sec), respectively. The ratios of the dissolution rates of stressed glasses to those of glass beads at zero effective stress were 1.5 ± 0.5 (35℃), 1.5 ± 0.4 (45℃) and 1.4 ± 0.6 (55℃), respectively, which means that the stressed glasses dissolve about 1.5 times as fast as glasses at zero effective stress. In response to a step-like increase of applied uniaxial loads, the dissolution rates of PS increased immediately, but the dissolution rate decreased gradually in the course of keeping the effective stress constant. The apparent activation energy of our PS experiments was calculated to be approximately (78 ± 12) kJ/mol, and this value is slightly smaller than (89 ± 1) kJ/mol of dissolution reaction of soda-lime glass at effective stress = 0. Our results clearly show that even at such low temperatures and low effective stresses, Si release into solution as a result of PS can be detected.
