In the profession we can distinguish, among others, two wide areas of study in macroeconomic modeling. On the one hand, mainstream macroeconomics-neoclassical and New Keynesian-assuming fully rational agents in which individuals interact indirectly through markets; on the other hand, agent-based macroeconomics that totally dispense with rationality and consider economies as adaptively evolving complex systems in which the direct interaction of individuals induces the emergence of macroeconomic phenomena (see Dawid and Delli Gatti 2018 for an extensive discussion). The former may be referred to as a top-down modeling strategy and the latter as a bottom-up approach. Where does the book Behavioral Macroeconomics: Theory and Policy by Paul De Grauwe and Yuemei Ji lie in this debate? Despite the claim by De Grauwe and Ji that they abandon the use in macroeeonomic modeling of "implausible assumptions about human behavior and about human beings to comprehend the world they live in" by proposing an "alternative modelling approach" that "opens the door to a new paradigm in which complexity emerges" (p.l), the approach proposed in their book lies more somewhere in between.
