摘要

Today's professionalized economics with its mathematical language and models emerged since the late-nineteenth century. Previously, economic analyses were verbal and before the Age of Enlightenment in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, often embedded in philosophical and religious tracts, i.e., in a strong normative environment. Islahi's book covers the history of Islamic economic thought from its origins in the seventh century up to the beginning of a long-lasting Muslim cultural and intellectual decline in the fifteenth century. Islahi provides ample evidence to debunk Schumpeter's "great gap" thesis-that nothing noteworthy has happened in the history of economic analysis during the 500 years between the Greeks and Thomas Aquinus. Islahi unfolds the economic thought in the Muslim world during this period and shows how Muslim ideas and concepts found their way into Europe. After centuries of intellectual stagnation, economic thinking started (again) in Europe with the scholastic philosophers around 1100, when Europe learned Greek philosophy from Arab texts translated into European languages. These texts did not simply reproduce the Greek originals, but were enriched by annotations, reflections, and comments by Muslim thinkers. They also inserted Islamic values such as equity and social justice, social welfare, or the common good. Scholars borrowed extensively from Muslim writings, but often did not quote their sources. This "intellectual debt" of Europe and the impact of Islamic ideas on scholastic teachings are recognized by a growing number of Western specialists, but has not yet found general appreciation in Western culture.
