摘要

In recent years, researchers, policymakers, and political leaders in both the advanced industrial and developing countries have devoted increased attention to infrastructure. This has been in response to accumulating evidence and a widespread consensus on infrastructure's vital role for sustained, broadly shared economic growth and international competitiveness. In South Africa, for example, the primary mechanism through which the government has been aiming to achieve the goals of its "Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative" is increased investment in infrastructure. Recently, in the United States, there have also been persistent calls for infrastructure investment to stimulate economic growth and job creation, and an infrastructure bank has been proposed to support the requisite project financing.
