Americans' attitude toward investing underwent a radical transformation around the turn of the twentieth century. As Julia Ott points out, an array of intellectual, political, corporate, and financial leaders actively promoted universal investment in financial securities, which they saw as a panacea for many of the perceived political ills of the nation.
