The EPA-fmanced study examined wastewater discharges by the 508 large ("major") chemical manufacturing facilities across the United States during the years 1995 to 2001, using a variety of statistical techniques to determine and isolate the effects of certain government interventions on corporate environmental behavior and performance. This book, however, focuses on just one aspect of the EPA-funded research—the self-reported responses of 97 facilities surveyed between the months of January 1999 and March 2003. The relatively small sample size, the self-reported nature of the data collected, and the relatively anemic statistics used create a text that disappoints, even as its prose proves both repetitive and confusing.
