摘要

Contemporary social scientists have emphasized differences in the incentives facing democratic and autocratic leaders, notably that democratic leaders need to satisfy a wider range of supporters than do autocrats, and consequently rely more on the distribution of private and public goods to many supporters, and less on a smaller group of supporters sustained by sheer repression. Bueno de Mesquita and Smith have been in the vanguard of such analysis, most prominently with their previous book (Bueno de Mesquita et al. 2003) and a host of articles in scientific journals and more popular media.
