Just when you thought the worst of the current economic malaise was over and a little sunshine was peeking through the clouds, here comes this little book to make you sink back into despondency. It is an ambitious effort, and perhaps it is the misfortune of Daniel Cohen that the English version of his book appears only a year after Ian Morris's massive and far more detailed Why the West Rules-for Now. Cohen is interested in nothing less than the future of the world economy, and much like Morris, believes he can make some judgments regarding the future from the past, a questionable venture even for seasoned professional economic historians.
