Gary Hufbauer and Kati Suominen's book was inspired by what they call the grand policy paradox of the hour: even though the recent financial crisis increased the importance of pro-globalization policies as a vehicle for reviving the world economy, the political debate in the United States and other countries has turned toward protectionism and isolationism. One may be tempted to dismiss this book as no longer relevant-after all, the global growth prospects look brighter now, the world has not seen a huge rise in protectionism and there has been a revival in global foreign direct investment (FDI) flows-but this would be a mistake. The authors rise up to the biggest challenge involved in writing a book of this kind, namely striking the right balance between focusing on the current events and expanding the book's shelf life by addressing issues of more lasting interest.
