摘要

There is a curious paradox in American colleges and universities. Big-time commercial university sports may be the single most visible activity engaged in by many major universities. Yet it is never mentioned in their charters and their public statements of purpose almost uniformly ignore it. Moreover, big-time sports do not seem to exist in institutional pronouncements and scholarship about higher education. College presidents seldom include it among the recognized purposes of their institutions-teaching, research, and service-and research on higher education hardly mentions the peculiar production of financially lucrative entertainment that emanates from institutions that otherwise disdain the appearance of commercial intentions. In this volume, Charles Clotfelter, Professor of Economics and Public Policy at Duke University, an institution at the pinnacle of big-time university men's basketball, asks why many universities, including his own, operate commercial sports programs while hardly acknowledging their existence. He goes on to try to assess whether this gigantic university entertainment enterprise is a threat to the preeminence of American higher education.
