This timely volume, edited by Harry J. Holzer and Demetra Smith Nightingale, brings together many of the top experts in the field to provide a thoughtful and thought-provoking case for the need to think systematically about workforce development. The assembled essays illustrate the complexity of the economic, social, and political issues involved and highlight a range of challenges that policy analysts and policymakers must confront.After providing an introduction to the U.S. workforce (Richard Freeman) and related policies (Burt Barnow and Demetra Smith Nightingale), the book goes on to address education and training issues for youth (chapters by Robert Lerman and Sarah Turner), less-skilled adults (Paul Osterman) and the "hard-to-employ" (Dan Bloom and David Butler).
