Eleven papers provide both qualitative and quantitative territorial scenarios for an enlarged Europe under different assumptions about the future direction in which the driving forces affecting development will move. Papers discuss space and theoretical approaches to regional growth (Roberta Capello); regional competitiveness-the move toward a concept of territorial capital (Roberto Camagni); space and empirical approaches to regional growth (Capello and Ugo Fratesi); national and regional econometric models (Barbara Chizzolini); the Macroeconomie, Sectoral, Social, and Territorial Model-a generative forecasting model of regional growth (Capello); the estimation procedure-data and results (Capello and Chizzolini); the simulation procedure-the algorithm, the target variables, and the stability of the model (Chizzolini and Fratesi); driving forces of change-the baseline scenario (Capello); global challenges and European strategies-alternative scenarios (Camagni and Capello); territorial images of the future-the quantitative foresights results (Capello and Fratesi); and the move toward a conclusion-regional and territorial policy recommendations (Camagni). Capello is Full Professor in Regional Economics, Camagni is Full Professor in Urban Economics, and Fratesi is Assistant Professor in Regional Economics at the Politecnico di Milano. Chizzolini is Assistant Professor of Econometrics at Bocconi University. Bibliography; no index.
