The acute toxicity of malathion and endosulfan on the fresh water fish Channa punctatus has been studied and sublethal, median lethal and lethal concentrations for 120 hours were assessed as 0.01. 0.025 and 0.075 mg/l for endosulfan, 100,225 and 300mg/l for malathian. respectively. During both 15 and 45 days exposure periods, muscle and liver showed a significant decrease in the biochemical constituents due to metabolic stress. Generally the amino acid level increased in blood (240 to 280. 100 to 160 mg/l 100 ml (malathion) and 240 to 285 and 160 to 185 mg/100 ml (endosulfan) for 15 and 45 days respectively), muscle (11.55-14.4 and 13.4-19.2 mg/g (malathion) and 11.5-15.0 and 13.4 -19.3 mg/g (endosulfan) for 15 & 45 days respectively) and liver (34.3 - 36.7 & 34.0 - 39.0 mg/wt. (malathion) and 34.0-37.5 and 28.0- 35.0 mg/wt. (endosulfan) for 15 & 45 days, respectively). The free sugar level increased in blood muscle for 15 and 45 days respectively and liver for 15 and 45 days respectively. The increased level of free sugar also able the animal to withstand the toxicant imposed stress conditions. The level of protien decreased in muscle and liver for 15 and 45 days respectively. It may be due to enhanced proteolytic activity, perhaps due to decreased, protien synthesis and complete utillization of us products for metabolism.
