Laboratory and field experiments were conducted to evaluate the direct and residual toxicity of EndosuJfan 35EC on ecologically important soil micro arthropod fauna. In the case of Cyphoderms javanus (Insecta: Coliemola: Entomobryidae) LD50 value of Endosulfan was 1.65 kg. ai/ha as against the highest recommended agricultural dose of 2.06 kg. ai/ha. The density of total micro arthropods. Collembola and C. javanus decreased significantly in the recommended agricultural dose(2.06 kg. ai/ha) treated soil of lady's finger crop ( Abelmoschus esculentus ) till 42 days. On the othcrhand. the lower dose ie LD_(50) dose (1.65 kg. ai/ha) of endosulfan could adversely affect the density of microarthropods in toto only up to 21 days and that of Colemboia and C. Javanus upto 35 days. The LD50 dose of the insecticide could reduce the incidance of Erias fabia ,a serious fruit and shoot borer pest of Abelmoschus esculentus to a safe level. The yield of crop was more or less similar in the plot treated with sub agricultural dose of Endosulfan and the plot treated with recommended agricultural dose of endosulfan.
