My career path to the technical communicator that I am today has been anything but direct. At the same time, my background suggests that I've arrived where I should be. My family tended toward restlessness and fierce individualism. My paternal grandfather moved his family from Iowa farmland to a Saskatchewan homestead and then to Oregon, while maternal ancestors traveled on the Oregon Trail to Oregon. Many ancestors worked in the timber industry, mostly as lumberjacks and truck drivers. My maternal grandfather and his brothers frequently moved their families as they set up and then left behind one timber camp after another. My independent-minded father during my earliest years worked for a timber-products corporation but soon opened his own business, never to work for someone else again. This family background made it easy to create my own career path, ultimately leading to freelancing.
