With this issue, we welcome back an old friend-both figuratively and literally. John Brockmann first published in JTWC in 1980, Volume 10 . At the time, he and I had just completed our first year of our first academic job, at what was then called Clarkson College of Technology (now Clarkson University). Mary Lay was our able mentor. Those of us who have read John's scholarship over the years have come to value it for its contributions to the history of our discipline. John has had a gift for discovering the obscure, researching it flawlessly to find every last bit of information about the subject, and then condensing that into articles and books that are both fascinating and useful. In mid-career, he answered the call to another profession, one not so different from that of caring professor, but his interest in exploring the arcane in technical communication continues, to the benefit of us all.
