Taming Information Technology: Lessons from Studies of System Administrators is an ethnographic study of IT system administrators. Drawing on first-hand observations and interviews with "sysadmins" conducted between 2002 and 2006, the authors document the communication exchanges between sysadmin personnel as they troubleshoot problems in complex technology with the goal of making "sysadmins and their work better understood by bringing to life the challenges they face and the complex environments in which they work" (p. ⅹⅰ). A recurring theme in each chapter is that sysadmins work in an abstract, technologically challenging environment, and the study is an evaluation of the communication strategies undertaken by the sysadmins the authors observed. After forecasting the book's themes in Chapter 1 "Motivations and Methods," the authors use the same structure to develop each subsequent chapter: an introduction to the theme of the chapter, one or more field observations, and a discussion section where the authors assess the observations, draw conclusions, and make recommendations. The authors frame the study by providing direct quotations of dialog from sysadmins they observe, documenting the various communication tools used in the process from e-mail, cell phones, instant messaging, and direct conversation. Dialog is interspersed with paragraphs explaining technical jargon in the vernacular, and the authors include call-out boxes that provide background information about the technology in question.
