摘要

The acts of silence and listening often have different motives and intentions. Still, one can often lead to the more productive use of the other. How do we decipher the meaning of these acts? How do we use them more effectively, or better still, understand how people around us apply silence and listening? When it comes to academics, what messages do we give and receive from students when words are not exchanged? In a recently released book edited by Cheryl Glenn and Krista Ratcliffe, the reader is encouraged to not only support silence and listening but also to recognize their value as arts. Through a wide variety of examples, theories, and techniques, Silence and Listening as Rhetorical Arts promotes stillness and thoughtfulness. Designed for faculty and students in the field of rhetoric, this book speaks to the overlooked tactics of restraint from speech as well as careful consideration of others' communication.
