Much of the foundational work in our discipline took place during the years of and immediately preceding World War II and continuing into the Cold War of the late 1940s and 1950s. Many of our pioneers, men and women who had experience in publishing departments of defense-related research and development companies of this period, went on to found courses and eventually programs in technical writing at large research universities. It was a natural fit, as much of the research in this period was also devoted to military defense. Quite a few of us who are still active in the discipline began our careers in the 1970s, toward the end of the pioneer generation's work and well remember serving on conference committees with them at the International Technical Communication Conference (ITCC) or later at the early Association of Teachers of Technical Writing (ATTW) sessions hosted by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) or the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC).
