During the course of a single, increasingly lengthy career, I have witnessed institutions of higher learning evolve from a focus on "learning for learning's sake" to a focus on careerist-centered learning in terms of how it prepares students to do something practical for which they can be paid upon graduation. The causes are often attributed to everything from the cost of a college education to the economy to the changes in 21st century industries and their expectations of college-educated employees. Whatever the reason, college educations have become more practical over the last 40 years.
