During the careers of many of us who have populated the academic house of our discipline, there have been manifest changes in the structure and operation of colleges and universities, from a point approximately 40 years ago at which institutions of higher learning were primarily led by faculty who often did stints in administration and returned to their primary interest of teaching and research once those stints were complete. Now most institutions are run by professional administrators and the cadres of support personnel that make up their empires.
