Antenna requirements for an indoor, high data-rate, millimetre-wave wireless local area network system are discussed. Topics considered include the need for shaped antenna beams for efficient cell coverage, resistance to multipath interference, low-cost manufacturing, signal polarisation and physical size constraints. A particular antenna, the ring-slot antenna, being developed as a candidate for this class of applications is described. Results for single ring-slot antennas operating in fundamental and higher order modes are presented. Generation of shaped and electronically scanned beams using an array of ring-slot antennas is described.
