With predictions of a broadband revolution in telecommunications services to residential customers and in response to pressure to improve customer service and reduce costs, many network providers are considering deploying new customer access network technologies to support a range of future services as well as existing services. The issues surrounding the choice of the optimum technology are not just technology issues but involve many complex business considerations as well. There are a number of customer access network architectures emerging as contenders but no one option stands out as a universal solution. The optimum choice is very dependent on the forecast demand for future services and on the unique operating conditions that exist in each particular situation.
